Ingredients

  • 1 kg Chicken wings
  • 2 tbsp Lemon pepper seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 for zest and juice Lemon
  • 20 g melted Butter

Instructions

  1. 1
    Season the wings

Pat 1 kg wings dry. Toss with 1 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp lemon pepper seasoning, 1 tsp garlic powder, and a pinch of salt. The lemon pepper does most of the flavoring work here.

  2. 2
    Air fry or bake

Air fryer: Cook at 200°C for 20-22 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Oven: Bake on a wire rack at 220°C for 40-45 minutes, flipping once. Both methods produce crispy results.

  3. 3
    Make the lemon butter

While wings cook, melt 20g butter. Add the zest of one whole lemon. This lemon butter adds richness and fresh citrus aroma that takes the wings from good to incredible.

  4. 4
    Toss and finish

Transfer hot wings to a bowl. Drizzle with lemon butter and toss. Squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top. The combination of zest (oils) and juice (acid) creates layers of lemon flavor.

Notes

  • Use fresh lemon zest — it makes a massive difference compared to dried.
  • Add the lemon juice at the very end, after tossing with butter, for the brightest citrus flavor.
  • Don't overcrowd the air fryer basket — cook in batches for crispiest results.
  • Flaky sea salt as a final garnish adds great texture contrast.

Crispy Lemon Pepper Wings

Lemon pepper wings are bright, zesty, and impossibly crispy. Unlike sauced wings that can be messy, these are a clean, elegant wing with bold flavor from the seasoning and fresh lemon finish. At only 260 calories per serving with 24g protein, they're one of the lightest wing preparations you can make.

The Finishing Touch

What separates great lemon pepper wings from mediocre ones is the fresh lemon finish. Lemon pepper seasoning alone gives you dried citrus flavor. Adding fresh zest in butter and a final squeeze of juice adds layers of bright, vibrant lemon that makes people ask for the recipe.

Variations

Feel free to change up this recipe and make it your own:

  • Garlic lemon pepper: Add 3 minced roasted garlic cloves to the lemon butter.
  • Spicy lemon pepper: Add cayenne pepper or red chili flakes to the seasoning blend.
  • Herb lemon: Add fresh chopped thyme or rosemary to the lemon butter for an herby variation.

Storage

Best eaten fresh and crispy. Store leftovers for up to 3 days. Reheat in oven at 200°C for 8 minutes — never microwave wings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many calories are in lemon pepper wings?

About 260 calories per serving with 24g protein, 2g carbs, and 18g fat. One of the lightest wing preparations since there's no heavy sauce — just seasoning, butter, and fresh lemon.

What is lemon pepper seasoning?

A blend of dried lemon zest, cracked black pepper, salt, and sometimes garlic or onion powder. You can buy it pre-made (McCormick is popular) or make your own by mixing lemon zest with freshly cracked pepper and salt.

Air fryer vs oven for lemon pepper wings?

Air fryer is faster (20 min vs 40 min) and produces slightly crispier results due to concentrated hot air circulation. Oven works well too, especially for larger batches. Both are great.

Can I make these without an air fryer?

Absolutely. Bake on a wire rack at 220°C for 40-45 minutes. The results are nearly identical — just takes a bit longer. Use the baking powder trick for extra crispiness.

Are lemon pepper wings keto?

Yes. With only 2g carbs per serving, they're very keto-friendly. The seasoning and butter are essentially zero carb. Perfect for a keto appetizer or meal.
